What is Semax?

Semax is a synthetic peptide, a short chain of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up every protein in your body. The version people use is seven amino acids long, with the sequence Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro. The molecule is small, and there's nothing exotic behind the name.
It was designed in Russia in the 1980s from a fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone, the stretch known as ACTH(4-10). That natural fragment carries the cognitive and attention-related effects of the hormone without its action on the adrenal glands, but the body breaks it down within minutes. Russian researchers bolted a Pro-Gly-Pro tail onto the end to slow that breakdown, and the result was a peptide stable enough to actually reach the brain after a dose.
In Russia it isn't an underground compound at all. It has been a registered pharmaceutical since the 1990s, sold as a nasal solution and listed among the country's vital and essential medicines for stroke and cognitive disorders. That regulatory history is real, and it's also specific to one country's standards.
What is it studied for?
Unusually for a research peptide it's been studied in people, but mostly in Russia over three decades and largely open-label, a lower tier of proof than "clinical" implies.
Semax has an unusual evidence base for a research peptide: it has actually been studied in people, not just rats. The catch is where and how. Most of that human work was done in Russia over the past three decades, much of it open-label rather than the large, blinded, placebo-controlled trials that Western regulators expect. So the human data exists, but it sits at a lower tier of proof than the word "clinical" usually implies.

The leading mechanism is reasonably well characterized in the lab. Semax rapidly raises levels of BDNF, a protein that supports the growth and survival of neurons, along with its TrkB receptor in the brain, and it nudges the dopamine and serotonin systems. That gives a coherent story for why it might sharpen focus and aid recovery. Whether that lab-level activity reliably produces the cognitive gains people are after, at the doses they actually use, is the part still open.
Why people use it
People use it for focus, mental clarity, and recovery after brain injury, but no large blinded trial confirms it and nearly all supporting human work is Russian and unblinded.
Most people who try Semax land in one of a few situations. These are the reasons they reach for it, not evidence that it delivers:

How to reconstitute Semax

Research-grade Semax ships as a vial of dry powder, and it has to be reconstituted before you can draw a subcutaneous dose. Mixing it is the same routine as any injectable peptide: a clean stopper, the right water, and a gentle hand. The steps below get the vial ready for the subcutaneous draw.
- Wipe the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab first, every time.
- Use bacteriostatic water, not plain sterile water and not saline. The trace of benzyl alcohol in it holds back bacteria, which matters because you'll be drawing from the same vial for weeks.
- Add the water slowly, running it down the inside glass wall. Don't blast it straight onto the powder.
- Don't shake it. Swirl gently and let it dissolve on its own. Shaking foams the solution and can damage the peptide.

That limit is about contamination, not potency; the peptide itself often stays good well beyond it. Reconstitute with plain sterile water instead of bacteriostatic and you drop to a day or two, since there's no preservative holding bacteria back.
Don't freeze a reconstituted vial, keep it out of direct light, write the mix date on the label, and throw it out if the solution ever turns cloudy or discolored, whatever the date says.

On competition: Semax is not named on the WADA Prohibited List, but don't read that as cleared. Because it isn't approved for human use by any major regulator, it most likely falls under the S0 catch-all for non-approved substances, which is prohibited at all times, and under strict liability the athlete carries the risk regardless of intent. Anyone subject to testing should treat it as bannable and confirm with their anti-doping body before going near it.
And the biggest risk here isn't really the molecule. It's whether what's in the vial is actually Semax, at the strength on the label. That comes down to where you buy it.
How to vet a source
A near-identical cousin, N-acetyl Semax Amidate, can be shipped in its place undetectably, so demand a batch-specific, third-party COA and match the lot number to your vial.
This is an unregulated market in the U.S., and a real share of independently tested vials come back underdosed, impure, or not even the compound on the label. Where you buy matters more than almost anything else here.
