Selank is a synthetic peptide, a short chain of amino acids, the same building blocks that make up every protein in your body. The version people buy is seven amino acids long, with the sequence Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro. It was developed in the early 1990s at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, working with the Zakusov Institute of Pharmacology, as an anti-anxiety drug.
It's built from tuftsin, a natural four-amino-acid immune peptide your body makes when it cleaves an antibody. Tuftsin on its own is useless as a drug because enzymes in the blood chew it apart in seconds. Russian researchers tacked on a three-amino-acid tail, Pro-Gly-Pro, that shields it from those enzymes. That small change is the whole point of the molecule: it keeps tuftsin's calming and immune effects around long enough, minutes instead of seconds, to actually reach the brain.
In the research-chemical market it arrives as lyophilized powder you reconstitute and inject subcutaneously, the same way the rest of this class is handled. It carries no sedation, no benzodiazepine-style high, and no reported withdrawal, which is the reason it drew interest as an anxiety treatment in the first place.

The catch is scale and independence. These were small trials, dozens of patients rather than the thousands a Western approval demands, run by the institutes tied to the drug, and rarely replicated outside Russia.
The trials that exist are genuinely encouraging within their limits. One comparative study put Selank head to head with medazepam, a benzodiazepine, in 62 anxiety and neurasthenia patients and found a similar anxiolytic effect with added anti-fatigue benefit and no sedation. Another reported that a subset of patients responded within the first few days of a two-week course, while the rest improved more gradually.
How it works is better understood than for most peptides, without being fully settled. The leading account is that Selank acts on the GABA system, the brain's main brake, behaving like a positive modulator the way benzodiazepines do but far more gently. It also nudges serotonin and dopamine signaling, slows the breakdown of the body's own calming enkephalins, and raises BDNF, a growth factor tied to learning. Which of these does the heavy lifting in a person, at the doses people actually use, is still open.

People want anxiety, stress, and focus relief without benzodiazepine sedation or dependence, but the supporting trials are small, Russian, and unconfirmed by FDA-grade study.

How to reconstitute Selank
Mix with bacteriostatic water, swirl don't shake; a 10 mg vial in 2 mL gives 5 mg/mL (5,000 mcg/mL), so 5 units on a U-100 syringe is 250 mcg.
Research-chemical Selank arrives as a small puck of dry powder you reconstitute yourself, then draw into an insulin syringe for a subcutaneous shot. (Russia's approved product is a ready-made 0.15% nasal spray you don't mix at all, but that's the foreign prescription form, not what ships here.) - Wipe the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab first, every time.

That limit is about sterility, not strength — the peptide itself often stays good well beyond it. Reconstitute with plain sterile water instead of bacteriostatic and you drop to a day or two, since there's no preservative holding bacteria back.

On anti-doping, the picture is unsettled rather than clear. Selank isn't named on the WADA Prohibited List. But the list's S0 category sweeps in any substance not approved by a government regulator for human use, and how that reads for a drug approved only in Russia hasn't been cleanly resolved for Selank in published anti-doping rulings. A competing athlete should treat it as a live risk, not a safe bet, and check with their anti-doping authority before using it.
And the biggest risk here isn't really the molecule, which has a calmer safety record than most. It's whether what's in the vial is actually Selank, at the strength on the label. That comes down to where you buy it.
