What is Glutathione?
A three-amino-acid antioxidant your body already makes in every cell; the injectable powder exists because oral absorption is poor, and it's sold as a supplement, not an approved drug.
Glutathione is a tripeptide, a molecule built from just three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. Your body makes it on its own, in essentially every cell, and uses it as its main line of antioxidant defense. It neutralizes reactive molecules that would otherwise damage proteins, membranes, and DNA, recycles other antioxidants like vitamins C and E, and helps the liver clear toxins. That's why it gets called the master antioxidant. It isn't exotic or new; it's a normal part of human biochemistry that supplement makers sell back to you in a bottle or a vial.
The cysteine in the middle is the working part, carrying a sulfur group that does most of the chemistry. Levels fall with age, illness, heavy drinking, and oxidative stress, which is the whole pitch behind supplementing: top up a system that's running low. The catch is that swallowing glutathione is not the same as making it inside a cell, and how much of an oral dose actually survives digestion and reaches your tissues has been argued over for years. That absorption problem is exactly why the injectable form exists.

People reach for glutathione for a handful of overlapping reasons. These are the motivations, not proof that it delivers:

How to reconstitute Glutathione

The injectable glutathione you buy as a vial of powder starts as a lyophilized solid that has to be dissolved before use, the same reconstitution step any lyophilized peptide needs. The other forms skip this entirely — oral capsules and liposomal liquids you take as they are, and nebulized or intranasal solutions come as ready liquids — but if you've bought a vial of powder to inject, reconstitution is step one.
- Wipe the rubber stopper with an alcohol swab first, every time.
- Use bacteriostatic water, not plain sterile water and not saline. The trace of benzyl alcohol in it holds back bacteria, which matters because you may be drawing from the same vial across several uses.
- Add the water slowly, running it down the inside glass wall. Don't blast it straight onto the powder.
- Don't shake it. Swirl gently and let it dissolve on its own. Shaking foams the solution and can stress the peptide.
A common subcutaneous setup is a 200 mg vial reconstituted with 2 mL of bacteriostatic water, giving 100 mg/mL. On a U-100 insulin syringe, 50 units is then 50 mg. The water doesn't change how much glutathione is in the vial; it only sets the concentration, which decides how many units you draw into the syringe. Clinics report 600–1200 mg per IV session for general use, with higher protocols of 1200–2400 mg in some settings. These are large volumes prepared and run by a clinician, not a draw you mix and infuse at home, and the lack of any agreed regimen is itself a warning sign.
There's no established cycle the way there is for a recovery peptide. Injectable users go by session; oral users tend to take it continuously. If you're trying it, starting at the low end of whatever route you've chosen lets you notice any reaction before committing to more. There's no medal for starting high.
Storage
Dry powder keeps for months at room temperature; once mixed, refrigerate at 2–8 °C and use within about 2–4 weeks, since it oxidizes and discolors.
That limit is about contamination, not potency — glutathione itself can hold up beyond it, though as an antioxidant it's prone to oxidizing and discoloring over time, so don't push it. Oral capsules and liposomal liquids follow their own label; keep liposomal forms refrigerated and sealed against air.
Don't freeze a reconstituted vial, keep it out of direct light, write the mix date on the label, and throw it out if the solution turns cloudy, yellow, or discolored, whatever the date says.
Side effects & safety
Oral doses are generally well tolerated, but injectable skin-whitening use has drawn explicit regulator warnings over kidney, liver, and life-threatening reactions.
With the injectable form, the safety issues are less about the molecule and more about how it's delivered and what's in the vial. Oral glutathione at supplement doses is generally well tolerated, with little reported beyond occasional digestive upset; the picture gets more serious as you move to injectables and IV.
- Subcutaneous and intramuscular: injection-site reactions are the most common issue.
- IV: the added risk of allergic and even anaphylactic reactions with infusions.
- Reported with IV skin-whitening specifically: liver, kidney, and nervous-system effects, plus skin problems including paradoxical darkening or patchy depigmentation.
- Oral: mild stomach cramps, bloating, or loose stools in some people; uncommon overall.
- Contamination and dosing errors from compounded or grey-market injectables, which is a delivery risk, not a property of glutathione itself.
Glutathione is not on the WADA Prohibited List, so the molecule itself isn't banned in sport. Athletes should still note that intravenous infusions above WADA's volume limit are a prohibited method regardless of what's in the bag, so an IV drip can be a violation even when the substance isn't. A subcutaneous shot doesn't cross that volume line.
And the biggest risk with anything injected here isn't really the molecule. It's whether what's in the vial is actually glutathione, at the strength on the label and free of contaminants. That comes down to where you buy it.
How to vet a source
The unregulated injectable grey market is where the trouble is, and this antioxidant degrades easily — demand a batch-specific third-party COA matching your vial's lot.
Glutathione sits in a market split between regulated dietary supplements and an unregulated grey market for injectable vials, and the second is where the trouble is. Independently tested peptide vials regularly come back underdosed, impure, or not the compound on the label, and with an injectable antioxidant that oxidizes easily, a degraded or contaminated vial is an easy way to get shorted or worse. Where you buy matters more than almost anything else here. The document that separates a real seller from a gamble is a certificate of analysis: a third-party lab's report on what's actually in the vial.
